Grooming...
Grooming is an important part of your dog’s health, with regular brushing and combing essential in maintaining a healthy, glowing coat. It eliminates mats and tangles, removes dead hair , dirt and burrs and distributes the natural oils, producing a healthy skin tone. Dogs who are groomed regularly tend to have a healthier and shinier coat because it stimulates the blood supply to the skin.

When a dog presents in a severely matted condition, it is our policy to shave the whole coat using electric clippers with a close blade. In these circumstances to de-matt would cause the animal stress and discomfort and therefore shaving a coat is quicker and gentler on the animal. Dogs can be traumatised by lengthy and uncomfortable de-matting sessions and it can put them off the grooming process for life.

If you require help and advice on how to care for your dog between grooming sessions please do feel free to ask, I will be more than happy to chat.

NB: De-matting can be a time consuming process and extra time will be chargeable. You will be fully consulted and made aware of any additional charge to be levied. However discounts are available for rescue dogs and those in foster – please ask for details.

When to cut your dog’s claws?

Each dog is different and there may be variation between breeds as to how long is too long, but as a general rule it has been suggested that if a dog is standing on a flat surface, their claws should not touch the ground. A good indicator that your dog’s claws may need a trim is if you can hear their claws clicking loudly as they move around on hard or tiled floors.

shave Policy
Depending on how active your dog is, and the types of surface they walk on, you should aim to trim your dog’s claws once or twice a month. Make sure you stick to this and get into a routine, i.e. first weekend of every month etc.
When a dog is presented to us in a severely matted condition it is our policy to shave the whole coat using electric clippers with a close blade. We always groom HUMANELY, to de-matt would cause the dog tremendous stress and discomfort, often leaving a very thinned and damaged coat. shaving the coat is much quicker and gentler on the dog. Many dogs are traumatised by unnecessary hours of de-matting, putting them off grooming for life. We consider shaving an act of kindness.

Once the coat is removed, the skin can be red due to the lack of air circulation and dirt that has accumulated underneath. Occasionally, there are sores, these may need veterinary treatment. Dogs tend to scratch and rub their skin after shaving, this is Normal, however some dogs can over scratch, and this may lead to broken skin. If in doubt always discuss with your vet.

Dogs feel different after shaving, lighter, off balance and cooler, most dogs are glad to have freedom to movement again and are full of life. Others seem to take quite personally that they are bald; they may hide and sulk for days. The skin will feel like suede and depending on the colour of the dog, can be pink. Regardless of how the dog will look, they will feel 100% better.

After each short session, give a small reward, as the coat begins to grow progress using a soft brush then a comb. When bathing your dog Always brush and comb the coat before and again after bathing.
